From January 20-27, 2019, John C. Biery, Jr., DO, CAQSM, Assistant Professor of Osteopathic Principles and Practice, Family Medicine, and Sports Medicine, served as the volunteer sports medicine physician for USA Wrestling’s 2019 Dave Schultz Memorial International Wrestling Tournament at the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. To participate in the volunteer program, Biery received training in the Safe Sports Program and Anti-Doping rules.
Providing sports medicine care along with Biery were athletic trainers, physical therapists, and chiropractors as well as the regular Olympic Training Center medical staff. These volunteers augmented the center’s staff to accommodate the increased volume in the sports medicine clinic and care during the event. Each day of the tournament began with medical exams and skin disease screenings in the early morning, followed by wrestling all day, and finals in the evenings.
“Being invited to help cover the tournament was a huge honor. Taking care of our (Team USA) high-level athletes is a real privilege!” John C. Biery, Jr., DO, CAQSM
