At the March meeting for the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP), the ACOM student chapter, Student Association of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (SAACOFP), was awarded the Humanitarian Award for participating in more volunteer hours than any other student chapter across the nation.
Over the course of the last year, ACOM’s SAACOFP volunteered 798 hours! Most of those hours were spent at the Samaritan Clinic on Thursdays, the Spanish-speaking Samaritan Clinic once a month, and the Samaritan Pantry the first 3 Saturdays of the month.
Sponsored by Love in Action International Ministries, the Samaritan Clinic is a free health, eye, and dental clinic for the medically underserved in Dothan and Houston County. ACOM first-year students perform triage and help in the pharmacy while second-year students follow the physicians and are allowed to perform histories and physicals. Volunteers at the Samaritan Pantry participate by providing clothes, hygiene items, food, and laundry services to Dothan’s homeless community.
