At the Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA) Spring Convention in Washington, D.C., ACOM’s SOMA Chapter was awarded the Excellence in Community Outreach/Service Award. ACOM SOMA outgoing President Carlos Garcia Galinda and outgoing National Liaison Officer Mayen Gonzalez accepted the award on behalf of the chapter.
The Excellence in Community Outreach/Service Award is granted each year to the chapter in each region that demonstrates a commitment to their communities through various service activities. ACOM’s SOMA chapter is heavily involved in the community. Their goal is to provide the Dothan community with access to care and resources and to promote the osteopathic philosophy.
ACOM SOMA hosted and organized monthly Dothan Rescue Mission visits to provide free healthcare screenings and counseling, visits to House of Ruth in support of domestic violence victims, participated and helped organize Walk a Mile in Her Shoes in the fight against domestic violence, and co-organized the Senior Prom at Wesley Place ALF with the Geriatrics Interest Group.
ACOM SOMA is incredibly appreciative of the immense support given to ACOM students and is proud to continuously serve the Dothan community. The chapter hopes to increase outreach efforts and try to further meet the local community’s healthcare needs any way they can.
