On November 7, 2018, ACOM’s Student Association of the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (SAACOFP), Global Public Health Advocates (GPHA), and Student National Medical Association (SNMA), held the annual “Are You Smarter than a First Year?” in which a faculty team and a student team compete in a Jeopardy-style game to see who has the most medical knowledge.
The student team included Gayathri Veeraraghavan, Mayen Gonzalez, Femi Osunnuga, Brandon Steingold, Bryant Truong, Xuan Ouyang, and Adam Thomas, and the faculty team consisted of Dr. Rick Misisichia, Dr. Wayne Parker, Dr. Jaishree Patel, Dr. Praful Patel, Dr. John Biery, Dr. Stephanie Gibson, and Dr. Ken Farmer.
This year the event was combined with Taste of ACOM, a multi-cultural feast-ival of food representing different cultures, ethnicities, states, and countries of ACOM students. Attendees got the opportunity to bid on items donated from local businesses in a silent auction and vote for their three favorite dishes from Taste of ACOM. The event raised more than $2,000 for DOCare International and will go to building new medical clinics in Guatemala.
“The event went better than we could have ever imagined! We raised a little over $2,000 for DOCare International [which] will contribute to building new medical clinics in Guatemala. The amazing thing about DOCare is that they help to maintain the clinics they already built. We also had a great time combining Are You Smarter than a First Year? with Taste of ACOM as it contributed amazing diversity to the event.” Kasey Chelemedos, SAACOFP President
