In October 2018, second-year student Mayen Gonzalez was elected as the Region II Trustee for the Student Osteopathic Medical Association (SOMA), the student branch of the American Osteopathic Association (AOA). The National SOMA Board of Trustees elections were held at OMED (Osteopathic Medical Conference & Exposition) in San Diego. To be elected, candidates must have held SOMA chapter leadership positions as President or National Liaison Officer, presented a speech at the SOMA House of Delegates at OMED, and must be elected by the House of Delegates by a majority vote.
Region II, the Southeast region, is comprised of 9 medical schools from Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. As the Region II Trustee, Mayen is responsible for leading all SOMA chapters in the region and is tasked with communicating with all chapter leaders to address their needs and concerns and provide ideas for improving their chapters.
“I could not have achieved this without the amazing ACOM SOMA President Carlos Garcia Galindo. I am incredibly honored to have been elected into this position and look forward to all the amazing work this newly elected Board of Trustees will accomplish.”
