Madison Buchman, a second-year ACOM student, won the Best Educational Research Poster Award at the American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) Region 5 Conference held at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) on February 10, 2018.
Buchman’s poster, “Women in Science: Changing Perspectives of the Younger Generation,” discussed ACOM’s annual science camp for school-age girls, and through survey data, demonstrated the event’s positive impact on girls’ perception of science.
More than 20 ACOM students attended the conference, which brought together AMWA chapters from Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi, Tennessee, and the Caribbean.
Conference programming focused on human trafficking, female work-life balance in medicine, mindfulness and meditation, and the female role and impact in healthcare professions. Presenters included women who work in specialties, including radiology, orthopedic surgery, emergency medicine, and OB/GYN. The UAB Emergency Medicine Residency Program also hosted a suturing workshop in conjunction with the conference.
Congratulations, Madison, on a job well done!
