Medical Student Fellows Scholars Programs

ACOM offers two one-year medical student Fellows Scholars Programs. Through these programs, the Fellow Scholars will receive a Master of Science in Adult Education (MSADE) degree, currently offered through a special arrangement with Troy University, as well as a certificate upon completion of the program and appropriate recognition at graduation.

Anatomy/OPP Fellows Scholars Program

The Anatomy/OPP Fellows Scholars Program through the Departments of Anatomy and Osteopathic Manipulative Medicine is designed to expand the educational opportunities for selected students with guided learning experiences in the areas of medical education, research, Osteopathic Principles and Practices, and Anatomy while they assist in all phases of the departments’ operations An important emphasis of the program is to formally train the students in medical education and begin a journey to achieve master’s level experience and preparation to become excellent teachers and faculty.

  • Assist in lecturing, teaching of practical skills, and/or mentoring of the first-, second-, and third-year medical students
  • Assist in development and implementation of OMS-III/IV network-wide OPP curriculum
  • Develop or participate in research projects with the assistance of the basic science and/or clinical faculty
  • Complete a Master of Science in Adult Education (MSADE), currently offered through a special arrangement with Troy University
  • Provide clinical services under the supervision of clinical faculty members
  • Devote a minimum of forty (40) hours per week to Fellowship activities
  • Fellows receive a monthly stipend (currently $1,500/Fellow)
  • Fellows receive support to attend national professional training ($1,500/Fellow)
  • Fellows are granted a tuition waiver during the fellowship year and one additional year
  • One-year program
  • Extension of predoctoral training period by twelve months, making the total time between matriculation and graduation five years
  • The term of the fellows scholar’s training may begin after successful completion of the OMS-II year, COMLEX Level 1 exam, and when the student is eligible for entry into the clinical years’ curriculum
  • If an Anatomy/OPP Fellow Scholar fails to complete the Fellowship Program, he/she will be required to repay the balance of full tuition and any fees regardless of the date of departure from the fellowship. Any serious extenuating circumstances will be considered such as a medical or financial emergency, maternity, call to active military service, etc. The monthly stipend will be immediately discontinued
  • Demonstrate professionalism as defined by the Standards of Professional Conduct in the ACOM Student Unprofessional behavior could result in disciplinary action, including, but not limited to a meeting with the program directors, a meeting with the Student Progress Committee, and dismissal from the program.
  • Maintain a level of professionalism expected of the ACOM Faculty. Unprofessional behavior could result in disciplinary action detailed in the ACOM Faculty Handbook.
  • Before entering the program, Fellows Scholars must verify that they have no conflict(s) of interest that may prohibit their professional duties. They are expected to make the program directors aware of any potential conflict(s) of interest that may arise.
  • Appropriate written requests for excused absences as defined in the current ACOM Student Handbook must be approved by the program directors and submitted to the Associate Dean of Student Services.
  • The Fellows Scholars Program schedule will reflect that of the OMS-Ill class. Fellows Scholars will not receive time off in the summer prior to beginning rotations, but holidays during the academic year, including Winter Break and Spring Break, will apply.
  • Fellows Scholars may be required to travel to core sites for didactic days and other ACOM-related functions as directed by the Associate Dean of Clinical Sciences.
  • Fellows Scholars may assist the Division of Student Services with interviews, online recruiting, campus tours, etc.
  • The Fellows Scholars are invited to attend InSPIRED Forum.

Clinical Simulation Fellows Scholars Program

The Clinical Simulation Fellows Scholars Program is designed to expand the educational opportunities for selected students with guided learning experiences in the areas of medical education, research, and Clinical Simulation while they assist in all phases of the ACOM Division of Clinical Sciences’ operation. An important emphasis of the program is to formally train the student in medical education and begin a journey to achieve master’s level experience and preparation to become excellent teachers and faculty.

  • Assist in all aspects of the Clinical Sciences Simulation program, and mentoring of the first- and second- year medical students.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of PCS I-IV Clinical Sciences Simulation program (i.e., writing and programing of cases, interfacing cases with high fidelity simulators, Simulation Competitions, etc.)
  • Teach, assist, and supervise the teaching of clinical skills (i.e., IV insertion, lumbar puncture, suturing, and physical exam).
  • Assess impact of curriculum on students.
  • Provide assistance to Primary Clinical Skills activities as directed by Clinical Skills faculty.
  • Develop or participate in research projects with the assistance of the basic science and/or clinical faculties.
  • Complete a Master of Science in Adult Education (MSADE) currently offered through a special arrangement with Troy University.
  • Clinical Sciences Simulation Fellows Scholars are required to devote a minimum of forty hours per week to Fellow Scholar activities.
  • Fellows Scholars will receive a monthly stipend (currently $1,500/Fellow Scholar) while engaged at ACOM fellows program activities.
  • Fellows Scholars receive support to attend national professional training ($1,500/Fellow Scholar).
  • Fellows Scholars will be granted a tuition waiver during the year of participation in the program and for one additional year.
